Successful fundraiser for Plymouth Taskforce

The Plymouth (Mass.) Taskforce for the Homeless added about $6,000 to its checking account as the net from a golf tournament held June 4, 2006 at Southers Marsh Golf Club, Plymouth. It was our first attempt at this popular method of fundraising and we are encouraged to double our efforts (and revenue!) next year.

We had 48 golfers signed up plus another half-dozen who joined us for dinner following the afternoon's "shotgun scramble" over the 18 hole course. Additional funds were raised by a silent auction and a raffle. The money will help with operating costs for our Next Step House, a "sober house" that is now home to seven formerly homeless men. We are going through the grant-writing process to enable us to buy the five-bedroom house we are currently leasing. Want to send a donation? Our address: Plymouth Taskforce for the Homeless, P.O. Box 3896, Plymouth, MA 02361.

[The Southers Marsh course layout was designed by the Will Stearns family to weave among the cranberry bogs that once were the main use of their extensive acreage. There are pine-forested hills, some sandtraps and those pesky cranberry bogs that swallow a poorly hit golfball. Walking onto the bogs is forbidden; when there are no players around, a course employee collects the "lost" balls which are then sold to benefit the Boys & Girls Club.]
